Lovely International Bisketti

Image
Café Bisketti was the first café I ever visited in Oulu, and I have been coming back ever since that cold October morning 23 years ago. It can be found in an old block at our pedestrian street called Rotuaari and its atmosphere brings back memories from my childhood. It reminds me of the traditional conditorias, where we would go sometimes to eat sweet cakes and drink cocoa or tea. It used to sport a wooden bar with a fake roof, but they removed this sometime ago. It has two very important things. The first one is that it stays open until 21:30 during the week and until 20:00 on Sunday, so after all other cafés are closed people stream to Bisketti. It is rather difficult to find a table to your self then. The second thing is its international clientéle. Whenever you come here, no matter the day or the time, you will always find some tables with non finns. Perhaps, this is the reason why we could always get special coffees in Bisketti, capucinos, lattés and espressos, long befor

Café Makia - no ifs ands or buts

This is "my" corner, photo by Tripadvisor. Sunday afternoon was turning into evening, and the options for this lonely woman to have coffee somewhere in Oulu were limited, since almost everything is closed by 18:00. Of the three available choices, I took Café Makia, since I had only been there two more times during the summer. I wanted to see if it would feel any different in a snow storm. Café Makia is relative new, built in one of our city´s most central parks, the Otto Karhi puisto, named after a prominent politician and entrepreneur of previous centuries. It replaced a typical Finnish "kioski", one of these canteens that serve men and women who come out of the bars in the middle of the night with sausages and other such food. Café Makia is not such a place. It belongs to one of the great commercial chains, and it describes its self as cosy with a modern twist. It is indeed modern looking, with all the corners and the strange shapes modern buildings seem t

A new beginning - Robert's Coffee

Well, here I am. A lonely woman who likes going out for coffee on Sunday evenings, and who lives in Oulu. A lovely place, but with few cafés, not really a café culture here, like all Finland I guess. I started few weeks ago visiting the various cafés of our city, tasting coffee and pastry, and I thought someone else might benefit from my experience, hence this blog. I might even have a secret hope that someone of you reading this will want to join me in drinking coffee one day. Few words for my tastes. I love coffee, but I cannot drink it after 15:00, I will not be able to sleep. So I go around most of the time tasting decaffeinated coffee. I like pastry, my favourites are always sweets, but my weight doesn't allow me much, so I normally end up eating something savoury. And since I love fruits, I might take also some smoothie or such. About these tastes, I can tell you first hand. But I intend to comment on how everything looks. Today, 27th of January 2019, I visited Robert
